Guests are invited to experience the exceptional artistry of the Odeion String Quartet, South Africa's premier resident string quartet, established at the University of the Free State in 1991.
Known for its powerful contributions to classical music, this quartet blends tradition with innovation, performing a diverse repertoire to wide acclaim across South Africa and internationally.
The quartet currently features Samantha Durrant (violinist), Sharon de Kock (violinist), Jeanne-Louise Moolman (violist), and Anmari van der Westhuizen (cellist).
Arthur Feder is an imminent, young South African composer who was recently commissioned by the Odeion String Quartet (OSQ) to write his 3rd string quartet, "The Tides Of..."; to be performed on the Quartet of Peace Instruments, of which the OSQ are custodians. This brilliant, evocative new work represents and tells the story of the four Nobel Peace Prize Laureates of South Africa. The Quartet of Peace instruments each represent these four important South African figures.
Beethoven's 2nd quartet of the "Razumovsky" set is named after the Russian Count of the same name. Written during his middle period, the extraordinary genius and complexities of Beethoven's string quartets become illuminated and thus set a new standard for the future of string quartet writing.
The programme also includes the world premiere of a work by Motshane Pege especially commissioned for the Odeion String Quartet by the Mzansi Chamber Music Collective.
