Open Langa

The streets of Langa will come alive with the energy of people, music, movement, and joy when Open Langa officially launche. This is a vibrant series of public space activations designed to reconnect communities, celebrate heritage, and reimagine our streets as places for people, not just cars.

Timed to coincide with Transport Month and Langa’s 100-year anniversary, Open Langa builds on the rich legacy of Open Streets Days in Langa and recent pedestrian experiments on Bree Street in Cape Town’s inner city. This year’s initiative is set to unfold in two exciting phases:

Phase 1: A one-day Open Streets Day on 26 October 2025, featuring the temporary closure of King Langa Libalele and Lerotholi Avenue. The event will transform these streets into a festive, car-free environment alive with art, music, activities, and local enterprise—an inclusive public space for all to enjoy.

Phase 2: The launch of a weekly vehicular restriction on Lerotholi Avenue, modelled on the successful Bree Street pilot. The regular closure will test the potential for long-term pedestrianisation, creating a safer, more vibrant space for community life.

Date: 26 October 2025
