PE Jewish Pioneers Memorial Museum

The PE Jewish Pioneers' Memorial Museum is located in the original 1912 Raleigh Street Synagogue in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). The building was designed by Orlando Middleton and built by the Kohler Brothers.

It is recognizable by its art nouveau features, turrets and keyhole windows, reminiscent of the period before the First World War. This style is echoed within the building, with details such as door handles, light fittings and columns.

As the oldest surviving synagogue in the Eastern Cape, it is not only a place to remember the Jewish community with the history displayed on its walls, but also a beautifully preserved piece of architecture.

It features a collection of memorabilia, ceremonial items, historical photographic displays, and a Jewish ex-servicemen's memorial.
