How Now Brown Cow presents the South African premiere of Suzie Miller's award-winning Prima Facie, directed by celebrated theatre maker Neil Coppen, whose previous credits include Isidlamlilo/The Fire Eater, Animal Farm and Tin Bucket Drum.
The production is a one-woman performance that tackles gender-based violence and the challenges faced by survivors navigating the justice system. Danica De La Rey Jones, known for Hunting Jessica Brok, Unseen and For Colored Girls, performs the role of Tessa, a brilliant young barrister who climbs her way up from working-class origins to the top of her profession. Tessa believes in the legal system until a brutal attack turns her world upside down, forcing her to navigate the same system she once championed. Now put on trial herself and re-traumatised through cross-examination, she finds herself questioning everything she believed about justice.
Written by Australian playwright Suzie Miller, the play premiered in 2019 at the Stables Theatre in Sydney before transferring to the West End, where it starred Jodie Comer and won two Olivier Awards. The production has since been performed across the globe and translated into multiple languages.
Parking is available at the Baxter Theatre. The nearest MyCiti Bus stop is Rondebosch Station on the T01 trunk route, approximately 500m from the venue.
