Roodepoort Theatre is the West Rand’s largest theatre venue. Situated in the Civic Centre in Florida Park, it was formerly the Pro Musica Theatre and has a rich history of classical music and opera.
The name changed to Roodepoort Theatre in 2013 when the institution integrated with the Soweto Theatre and the Joburg Theatre under the theatre management company, Joburg City Theatres. The venue includes its main theatre, seating 328 people, and the basement theatre with a capacity of 85 to 100.
The theatre's family-oriented programming includes comedy, dance, drama, musical tribute shows and a special focus on theatre for young audiences. Calendar highlights include the annual Jozi Community Arts Festival; the ATKV Tienertoneel, a national drama competition that aims to enhance the love of theatre in learners; and the Roodepoort Dance Festival.
The Roodepoort Theatre also hires out its space as a way to uplift and develop its community. The objective is to train previously disadvantaged youth in music, dance and drama.
