Silent Movie Organ Improvisation

German organist and composer, Franz Danksagmüller, creates a live, improvised soundtrack to silent American film, 'Phantom of the Opera', by Rupert Julian.

He draws not only on his fascination with historic instruments, in this case the organ, but also embraces the most modern tools of sound-design.

This is a live dialogue between image and sound, between the silent era’s expressive power and the cutting-edge creativity of our own time that is perfect for curious minds, film-lovers, and anyone eager to witness the unpredictable spark of real-time composition.

This concert is a part of the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival 2026 - a yearly celebration of one of the greatest composers in the Western Classical oeuvre which is dedicated to the upliftment and education of classical music in Johannesburg, and South Africa as a whole.
