The Soweto Derby features a clash between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, the two biggest football clubs in the country. With both clubs starting in Soweto, the rivalry began when former Orlando Pirates star Kaizer Motaung founded Kaizer Chiefs in 1970, with the very first game between the two teams taking place on January 24, 1970.
Over the years, the fixture has become a cornerstone of South African football, and, as always, bragging rights are on the line. With FNB Stadium, colloquially known as 'Soccer City', being the space where black and white meets gold, the entire city of Joburg is also taken over by the derby, with football lovers at home and in Soweto, cheering on their team in hopes that they cement their legacies.
