Take a Sad Song and Make It Better is a Sunday afternoon event where the Charl du Plessis Trio and the Phoenix Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Richard Cøck, honour the Beatles in a vibrant crossover programme, featuring Charl’s signature jazz-infused arrangements of some of the world’s most beloved songs.
Formed in 2006 to promote crossover and jazz music, The Charl du Plessis Trio comprises pianist Charl du Plessis, bassist Werner Spies and drummer Peter Auret. The trio are fuelled by an undeniable musical chemistry and understanding of each other’s musical personalities, creating a captivating and exciting sound. It's the juxtaposition of classical and jazz music in their arrangements that led to international recognition as one of the leading crossover exponents of their time.
Richard Cock is a musician and conductor who conducts throughout South Africa and the world. Many feel he has done more than anyone in South Africa to popularise classical music, and he is always looking for new and innovative ways to bring music to new audiences.
