The Firebird

After a sold-out run at Artscape and standing ovations at The Hollywood Bowl, Ravinia, The Mann Centre, and Wolf Trap, The Firebird returns to Cape Town. This bold reimagining of Stravinsky's iconic score fuses larger-than-life puppetry with contemporary African dance.

A young woman's quest to claim her creative power unfolds as an intense inner journey - navigating opposing forces, learning to integrate them, moving towards free expression. Towering puppet creatures rise. Dynamic choreography surges. One of the greatest orchestral scores ever written builds to a rousing climax as the magnificent Firebird takes flight.

Directed by Janni Younge and choreographed by Jay Pather, The Firebird reimagines Stravinsky's 1910 ballet through a distinctly South African lens. The production centres on the Seeker, whose journey becomes a metaphor for awakening and transformation. Younge's signature large-scale puppetry—featuring mythical creatures that tower over the performers—combines with Pather's contemporary choreography to create a visual language that's both ancient and utterly modern.
