Event information
The Great Train Race invites history-lovers to fully immerse themselves in the customs and traditions of an antiquated era, showcasing and celebrating vintage vehicles and attire.
In celebration of a race between a Bentley and Le Train Bleu in 1930 from Monte Carlo to Calais, everyone dresses up in clothes and trinkets from a bygone age to enjoy the spectacle and live in the past for a wonderful day out, young and old alike.
Hosted at Heidelberg Station, from 9.30am, the day starts with the gleaming Rovos Rail 19th-century steam train arriving over the bridge, chugging alongside the arriving cavalcade of vintage cars and motorcycles from the early 1900s, while buzzing biplanes twirl about in the sky above.
Shortly after that, the Heidelberg Airfield vintage car and motorcycle cavalcade arrives and threads its way through the vintage aircraft to be welcomed by proud pilots in historic aviation kit. Another event highlight is the display of the thundering Harvards and Pumas, whose pilots smoke the skies with their silky skills.
Following the excitement, the ancient cars and motorcycles come to rest under their national flags - Italy, France, India, the USA, West Germany, Great Britain, Sweden, and Russia – with a menu of cuisines available with each flag, offering an authentic cultural experience.
Featured under the South African flag is a fresh breakfast roll with a cup of piping hot, expertly blended coffee. For those who do not mind an afternoon drink, some freshly brewed SA craft beer straight from the tap, or a tall glass of unique locally made gin are available.
There are also a number of stalls at the event selling tons of vintage goods, while a great live band jam up some tunes. This year they introduce a dedicated safely fenced off kids' area equipped with a miniature pukka steam train, crafts, candle dipping, and much more.
Guests who want to elevate their experience can opt for a VIP ticket which includes a private area and a three-course lunch. Those who do not arrive in vintage wear are subject to an additional R30 surcharge fee.
