The Guy Butler Theatre

Named after the renowned South African poet, playwright and academic, the Guy Butler Theatre is situated on the Old 1820 Settlers Hill in Makhanda (Grahamstown) and is home to the National Arts Festival. Originally the Settlers Monument, it was renamed and rebuilt in 1996.

The 940 seat main auditorium is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities including an orchestra pit that comfortably hosts a 50 piece orchestra.

It’s a comfortable and versatile space that accommodates opera shows, ballet productions, movies, live bands, and orchestras. Over the years - particularly through the National Arts festival: it has been host to a number of iconic artists from Hugh Masekela and Madala Kunene to Madosini.
