The DC Youth Orchestra travels to South Africa, continuing its long tradition of cultural exchange through music.
The orchestra has performed across the United States and in 24 countries, including recent tours to Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic.
The concert repertoire includes Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's Ballade in A minor, DCYOP composers: Raffie McEachin's The Primordial Orb Dances and Kalman Levitin's Chimera, Norman Dello Joio's Variations, Chaconne, and Finale, Evan Ross Solomon's Hematite, and Antonín Dvorák's Symphony No. 8 in G Major.
The DC Youth Orchestra Program (DCYOP) was founded in 1960 by music educator Lyn McLain, and has grown into a leading youth music education organizations, serving young musicians from across the Washington, DC region. The DCYOP provides accessible orchestral training for students ages 4½ to 18, welcoming young people regardless of background or prior experience. Through various classes, including ensemble rehearsals, group lessons, and summer programs, students develop musical excellence, discipline, confidence, and community.
