Explore the Majakaneng Heritage Hiking Trails in North West

The Majakaneng Heritage Hiking Trails starts at the edge of town, winding its way up to the mountain summit where hikers can take in incredible views in all directions while walking along the ridge.

Majakaneng Heritage Hiking Trails, steeped in history with magnificent views

The heritage trail follows a 10km circular hike that is moderately challenging, and other trail options include a 5km circular route that reaches the top of the first Northern ridge. There’s also an easy 3km walk through the shady forest and kloof that’s ideal for beginner hikers and kids.

Eventually, most of the Majakaneng Heritage Hiking Trails descend through a wooded kloof of magical forest trees alongside a mountain spring and stream. This kloof area is believed to hold tremendous spiritual significance to local tribes.

You’ll find many excellent examples of British fortifications from the Boer War dotted along the summit. If hikers are very quiet, they may get a glimpse of the resident pair of endangered Mountain Reedbuck. Comprehensive trail signage covers the historical and cultural heritage of Majakaneng and its geology.

Botanical lovers will appreciate the tree identification tags and ecology and biodiversity aspects are covered in separate signage. All trail operations at Majakaneng Heritage Hiking Trails are managed by residents and knowledgeable and passionate Eco-rangers who always provide interesting insight and stories along the hike.

The trail base has basic facilities and a safe place to park your car. After your hike, catch your breath with a picnic or braai experience with friends and family.
