We’ve put together a list of 5 fun, yet unusual things you can get up to in a day in Gauteng.
1. Sterkfontein Caves
Located about 50km out of the city, the drive will take you about an hour. Explore the Sterkfontein Caves where scientists have discovered many hominid and other animal fossils, dating back more than 4-million years. Guests can also tour the archaeological finds including ancient stone tools and fossil sites at the Maropeng Visitor Centre.
2. Kwa-Khaya Lendaba Cultural Village
Also known as the Credo Mutwa Cultural Village, this strange yet interesting place is situated in Central Western Jabavu, Soweto. Created by renowned author, artist, and traditional healer, Credo Mutwa, the cultural village offers an outdoor museum celebrating African art, culture, and folklore.
3. Nanhua Temple
Situated in Bronkhorstspruit (a town 50km east of Pretoria), the Nanhua Temple is the largest temple in Africa. The temple is rich in Chinese architecture, culture and art, with Buddhist events which offer celebrations of fanfare and food.
4. Goblin’s Cove
Well-known sculptor Charles Gotthard has created the world of Goblin’s Cove in the foothills of the Magaliesburg mountain range, less than an hour’s drive from Pretoria and Johannesburg. Goblin’s Cove Fantasy Restaurant offers a unique dining and accommodation experience. A beautiful setting, a superb menu and cosy train cabins for those who want to stay over.
5. Duncan Yard
Duncan Yard is a quaint centre in the heart of Hatfield that provides an arty cultural experience. The yard is comprised of picturesque corridors, filled with various treasures.
