While the country celebrated the international Football World Cup landing on African soil for the very first time, with no ball, no net, and a whole heap of attitude, roller derby made its debut on the continent in July 2010, courtesy of what was then C-Max Roller Derby.
Join the Golden City Rollers on Saturday, 7 November 2026 as they celebrate 16 years of roller derby in Africa.

A brief history of South African roller derby and the Golden City Rollers
C-Max Roller Derby was determined to become a new fighting force in women’s sports in South Africa. The early days of derby in Johannesburg embodied the DIY, punk-rock attitude of the sport.
Sixteen years later, the DIY spirit remains, but the league, rechristened as Golden City Rollers in 2017, has grown into a powerhouse – the highest-ranked roller derby league on the African continent.
Lovers of the sport are invited to celebrate a history that includes international victories in Germany in 2025, Roller Derby World Cup qualifications, and much more. Mirror balls, glitter and hits await fans at Mandeville Sports Club this November.
