Ground Zero Adventures: 13 Adrenaline Activities to Enjoy in Johannesburg

If you’re a thrill-seeking adventurer pining for the ultimate outdoor experience, Ground Zero Adventures might be just what you are seeking. At Ground Zero, adventurers can enjoy a range of activities to suit their desires. Whether you are looking to face your fears, challenge yourself, or simply enjoy an activity that you may not be able to find elsewhere, Ground Zero Adventures has got you covered.

On any day of the year, including public and national holidays, Ground Zero Adventures is open to all. There are a total of 13 activities that you can take your pick from, the longest of which can take up to four hours. Adventurers can come for one activity or book enough activities to fill their entire day through their combo options.

Adrenaline Activities in Joburg

Abseiling

If you are looking to conquer a thrilling descent from high above, then try abseiling. Abseilers will enjoy scenic views as they scale down the side of a cliff, harnessed by a rope that enables them to safely maintain control over their speed as they scale down.

Cost: R500pp

Time: Abseiling slots are available between 8am and 4pm every day. Earlier times can be requested during the summer season.
Activity length: Abseilers are typically allocated two hours to complete the descent. Participants can work at their own pace within those hours.
Minimum Persons Allowed: A minimum of four people are required to take on the abseiling adventure.

Axe Throwing

Axe throwing is the perfect activity for those who wish to relieve stress and improve their strength and hand-eye coordination. It offers the benefits of a workout whilst being a fun outlet for pent-up tension. Participants get to release their stress onto the target over and again for up to 15 throws. All those interested in the activity will be trained by a professional guide before giving it a go themselves.

Cost: R150pp for 15 throws.

Activity Length: This activity typically takes up to one hour, depending on the size of the group participating.
Minimum Persons Allowed: Any number of people are able to enjoy this activity.

Archery

Hone your aiming abilities with an archery session.  The activity is said to be particularly enjoyable as a team-building exercise, though taking it on as an individual challenge is welcomed. Often those participating in archery start by being taught the basics, before being split up into teams and competing against one another.

Cost: R150pp, per 10 arrows or R300pp for one hour and unlimited arrows.

Time: Archery slots are available between 8am and 4pm every day. Earlier times can be requested during the summer season.
Activity Length: The archery activity typically takes between one and two hours to complete.

Bush Games

Bush games is another ideal team-building activity. Teams will be divided and asked to participate against one another in a challenge that considers more than the physical. To come out on top in this survival challenge, teams will have to work together and think strategically.

Activity Length: The bush games typically take between three and four hours to complete.
Minimum Persons Allowed: A minimum of six people are required for this activity.

Bush Chefs

This activity is for the food lovers. Bush chef participants are tasked with cooking up four meals in the beautiful outdoors. Supplied with all necessary equipment and ingredients, the participants are split into teams, each of which must prepare meals that impress the Ground Zero judges, who will declare the winning team after a round of tasting. Once the competition is over, each team can enjoy their meals.

Geckoing

Geckoing is a fun water activity for all. The activity combines tubing activities with cliff jumps for those who want to be fully submerged in the water. Those participating in the geckoing activity are advised to bring sunscreen and an extra pair of clothing along with them. Everything else will be provided for by Ground Zero Adventures.

Cost: R500pp

Time: Geckoing slots are available between 8am and 4pm every day. Earlier times can be requested during the summer season.
Activity Length: Geckoing typically takes between two and two and a half hours.
Minimum Persons Allowed: A minimum of four people are required for this activity.

Fear Factor

This activity is ideal for those looking to face unexpected challenges that might force them to face their fears. The fear factor competition requires that participants complete challenges such as eating unfamiliar foods and taking on unique physical activities. This activity also challenges teammates’ abilities to trust one another, with some of the exercises being heavily dependent on team communication.

Go Karting

From behind the wheel, go karting participants will be given the chance to work the racecourse at their own pace, either taking a leisurely drive through or going full throttle in competition with other participants.

Cost: R350pp for six laps or R550pp for 12 laps

Time: Go karting slots are available between 08:00 and 16:00 every day. Earlier times can be requested during the summer season.
Minimum Persons Allowed: Any number of people are able to enjoy this activity.

Horseback Riding

You do not have to be an experienced horse rider to enjoy this activity. Anyone, from amateurs to experts, can enjoy this calm and scenic horse-riding trail. Participants need not bring along any equipment but are advised to wear long pants and low-heeled boots or shoes. This activity also has a 90 kg weight limit.

Cost: R550pp

Time: Trail slots are available between 08:00 and 17:00 every day.
Activity Length: The trail will be an hour long.
Minimum Persons Allowed: Any number of people are able to enjoy this activity.

Paintballing

This activity is suitable for people of all ages who enjoy a bit of friendly competition and a lot of action. Participants can choose if they want to be provided with the full paintballing gear or to bring their own. Newcomers will be taught how to handle the paintball gun safely and correctly by qualified range officers. Once training is complete, the participants will be able to battle it out in the range.

Cost: R120 – R350pp (dependent on the amount of balls and equipment required by the participant) and R1 500 for a box of 2000 balls.

Activity Length: Paintballing typically takes between one and two hours.
Minimum Persons Allowed: A minimum of four people are required for this activity.

Survivor

Survivor is a high intensity team activity that challenges participants mentally and physically. Participants will be divided into teams and will have to compete against one another in a number of challenges until one is crowned the winner. The winning team of each challenge gets to earn points and steal a team member from the losing team. All the points and steals accumulated throughout the challenge will count towards crowning the final champions.

Quad Biking

This is another activity suited to those who enjoy a bit of action. Each participant will be given a quad bike and protective gear that they will use to navigate through the bush trees. Participants will be accompanied by experienced guides as they enjoy more scenic views from their bikes.

Cost: From R600 – R850pp

River rafting is another activity ideal for a team of two. The trip is about 4km in length and allows participants to enjoy the local bird and wildlife as they raft. Participants are also encouraged to bring sunscreen and an extra pair of clothes along with them.
