The heritage of Rand Steam
Rand Steam Shopping Centre is one of Johannesburg’s most intriguing heritage revival projects, transforming the former Rand Steam Laundries & Cleaning & Dyeing Works into a character-filled neighbourhood shopping destination. Originally established in 1902, the site was once a bustling, steam-driven industrial village complete with workers’ cottages, workshops and service buildings, operating day and night at its peak.
Today, the centre has been thoughtfully reconstructed with adaptive re-use in mind, retaining the original streetscape and industrial charm while introducing contemporary retail, dining and creative spaces.
