Support Gcina Mhlope’s book drive in Newtown

gcina mhlopheStarting on the 1st of December 2016, members of the public can bring children’s books, textbooks and business related books to a drop-off point at Newtown Junction Mall.

One of the first beneficiaries of this drive will be the Abantu Book Fair, taking place on 8th, 9th and 10th of December.

A library of books is one of the most precious resources a school can have, but in South Africa there are many schools that have no books available for the learners at all.

Started in 2001 by Dr Mholpe, the Nozincwadi: Mother of Books Project aims to introduce and encourage literacy and reading in schools across the country, while promoting South African authors and stories. The project has traveled around the country performing, sharing stories and emphasising the importance of literacy in today’s world.

Nozincwadi helps teachers and librarians set up library boxes, and where there are libraries in place, it brings new books to the shelves. To date, with the help of volunteers from all walks of life, it has supported over 800 schools.
