Watch as South Africa’s top emerging dance groups and soloists show off incredible talent for The Amapiano Dance Championship happening from 31 October to 2 November at Joburg Theatre. This exciting and dynamic dance competition celebrates the vibrant Amapiano dance culture in South Africa. The event promises high-energy performances, cultural celebrations, and an experience that merges the best of Amapiano music and dance with professional theatre production. Here’s what you need to know.

How the Amapiano Dance Championship works
Amapiano is a music and dance movement that has captured the hearts of South Africans and the world. The first phase of The Amapiano Dance Championship took place at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town followed by a season running from 31 October to 2 November at Joburg Theatre. Future series are planned for other regions such as Durban, Bloemfontein, and Gqeberha.
The competition is an initiative by Elvis Sibeko Studios and invites dancers from across the country the opportunity to perform on prestigious stages while blending Amapiano’s energetic street-originated dance style with the professionalism of theatre performance. Soloists, duos, trios, and groups can all showcase their talent, creativity, and passion for Amapiano in front of a live audience at some of the most iconic venues across the country.
Invaluable mentorship and a cash prize for the winners
More than just a contest, the Amapiano Dance Championship aims to empower young, emerging dancers, particularly those from disadvantaged communities. The challenge provides participants with a life-changing opportunity to learn, grow, and be exposed to professional platforms they may not have previously accessed.
Each dancer or group will benefit from professional theatre craft workshops worth R25,000, covering skills like choreography, lighting and sound design, costume creation, and navigating the entertainment business.
Regional qualifiers lead to a national showdown with participants battling it out for the grand prize of R50,000, trophies, and receiving the title of Amapiano Champion. Beyond the competition, dancers have the chance to be scouted by talent agencies, film production companies, and dance schools, making this a potential launchpad for their careers in the entertainment industry.

Guest live music performances for the evening
For the first time ever, Zimbini Makwetu will be gracing the Joburg Theatre stage, bringing her powerful voice and electric energy for the Grand Finale and Award Ceremony on 2 November. Zimbini’s artistry is centred around African cinematic Afro-Pop sounds. Experience hit songs from her debut album Ndiyehlela as well as her second album Kuk-kurukugu.
