The Greenhouse x Shortmarket Club Fuses Dining and Nightlife

The Greenhouse in Sandton is now officially the home of the legendary Shortmarket Club, offering elevated dining with an eclectic Joburg atmosphere.

The Greenhouse Sandton isn’t just a restaurant. It’s South Africa’s first authentic supper club — a concept that reimagines dining as an immersive, sensory-driven experience. With the seamless flow from sunset cocktails to decadent dinners and late-night dancing, The Greenhouse transforms as the night unfolds, creating a rhythm that’s as dynamic as its menu. It’s where gastronomy meets glamour, and every night out becomes a story worth sharing.

The restaurant is curated by world-renowned South African chef Siya Mlaba, and their new menu is a sensory passport through Mediterranean and French cuisines, with carefully layered Asian influences that create a fusion of flavours that’s both sophisticated and approachable. Nikita Pillay visited the spot and shares her verdict below.

What’s on the menu at Greenhouse x Shortmarket Club

Chef Siya welcomed us with a feast of favourites from the Greenhouse x Shortmarket Club collab, each one better than the last. We started with the Shrimp Popcorn Pops – crisp, golden, and full of flavour in just one bite – and the Tempura Prawn Sticks, which were light, crunchy, and perfectly seasoned.

The Grilled Peri Peri Prawns brought a smoky heat, balanced with freshness, and the chicken pasta was creamy and comforting without being too heavy. We also tucked into a beautifully presented sushi salmon platter, which brought a cooling contrast to the warmer dishes – a well-thought-out pause in the menu that we appreciated.

But if we had to choose the standout stars, two plates had us completely won over. First, the Sesame-Crusted Seared Tuna: melt-in-your-mouth slices of perfectly cooked tuna with a subtle crunch from the sesame, finished with a bold Mexican chilli and ponzu dressing that packs a zesty, umami punch. Every bite was perfectly balanced – delicate yet full of flavour.

Then came the Hot Honey Halloumi, which surprised us in the best way. While the crispy halloumi was delicious, it was actually the bed of fresh mixed greens, tossed in a lemon vinaigrette and drizzled with warm honey, that stole the show. The sweet, tangy, slightly spicy notes from the dressing paired beautifully with the richness of the cheese. It’s a rare moment when the salad component outshines the hero ingredient, but this one did just that.

From the drinks menu, the Henry Pot with smooth and herbal overtones and a classic Whiskey Sour with its tart and punchy accents, both underscored the mixology team’s clear attention to balance and detail.

The whole experience felt both elevated and familiar, like eating something entirely new, yet comfortingly good. It’s clear that Chef Siya has not only poured skill and creativity into this menu, but a genuine sense of hospitality too.

The atmosphere

The Greenhouse x Shortmarket Club is set in a space filled with lush greenery, soft golden lighting, and vintage details that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a warm, tucked-away gem. There’s something special about the way the setting quietly encourages you to slow down and savour what’s in front of you – and that’s exactly what we did.

It’s definitely worth noting how warm and knowledgeable the staff were friendly without being overbearing, and genuinely excited to talk through the dishes with us.

This exciting collaboration is the brainchild of hospitality entrepreneurs Heinz Rynners, Luke Dakers and Ben Stanger, who over the past five years have earned a reputation for creating high-end dining experiences that are anything but ordinary. The trio are also set to open Ocaso, a new Mexican concept developed in partnership with Corona, set to launch soon in the former Shortmarket Club location.
