Golden City Rollers Open Day

If you’re looking to try something a little different, Golden City Rollers (GCR), Africa’s highest-ranked roller derby league, is inviting Joburg adults to trade their tekkies for eight wheels at its free Open Day. This fun, high-intensity social sport is a unique experience and a popular take on traditional roller skating.

Roller Derby at Golden City Rollers is a great social event that offers an inclusive, welcoming community of all gender identities, races, sexual orientations, fitness levels, and body shapes. The training programme is designed to teach you everything you need to know to level up as a skater.

The Open Day gives visitors the chance to experience roller derby from the inside out. Regardless of skating experience, GCR’s structured training programme starts with the basics and helps new members build the sport-specific strength, stamina, and skills they need over time. They also provide skates and protective gear for members’ use at a nominal rental fee.

The day begins with a live exhibition game, followed by an opportunity to meet GCR members, ask questions, and learn more about the league. Those ready to jump in can take part in Land Derby – a fun, on-foot introduction to the basics of the game – before lacing up quad skates and trying some skating skills with experienced GCR members.

The club has plenty of skates and gear available to use during the intake. Just take a bottle of water, and wear comfortable clothes you can skate in.

If guests are only interested in skating but not playing, GCR is recruiting skating referees and non-skating officials, with training provided and no previous experience required. Officiating is a fantastic way to be a part of our community without committing to taking contact.
