What is Breakfast with Mugabe about?

Set in the final years of Robert Mugabe’s rule in Zimbabwe and inspired by real events, Breakfast with Mugabe takes a look the troubled mind of the once-revered leader as he battles inner demons and political paranoia. As the country edges closer to unrest, Mugabe seeks help from an unexpected source – a white psychiatrist which ultimately leads to a tense and dangerous power struggle.

Breakfast with Mugabe is a compelling drama that resonates far beyond Zimbabwe’s borders. The play is directed by Calvin Ratladi, who is one of the freshest voices in South African theatre and winner of the 2025 Standard Bank Young Artist for Theatre. Themba Ndaba leads as Mugabe with supporting roles by Gontse Ntshegang as Grace, Craig Jackson, and Farai Chigudu. The South African premiere of Breakfast with Mugabe premiered at the National Arts Festival earlier this year.
