Of roses and other flowers: Tributes to the floral kingdom

You’re in for a delightful afternoon with The Johannesburg Bach Choir as they pay tribute in song to the floral kingdom. Flowers have inspired music composers for centuries, and the choir will create music in honour of the Baroque era’s Michael Praetorius, the Romantic era’s Herbert Howells, and the 20th-century musical duo Rodgers and Hammerstein.

There’ll be an opportunity for the audience to sing along to some popular and well-known songs in honour of flowers and nature, and listen to Janré van Jaarsveld’s magnificent tenor voice. The recent festivals of Easter and Passover with Handel’s famous Hallelujah Chorus and a Hebrew setting of Psalm 93 by Louis Lewandowski, Adoshem Moloch also form part of the programme.

As usual, the concert will be followed by one of the choir’s famous tea-time spreads when guests can get to know the Johannesburg Bach Choir members – and maybe even consider joining the choir.

The new venue is the Marantha Dutch Church, 3 Sherborne Road, Parktown (just two properties from the well-known St George’s Anglican Church). Some parking is available on the premises, and there will be car guards on duty in the street.

Cost: R220pp including tea and light refreshments, book via Quicket

When: Sunday, 19 April from 3:30pm to 5pm
Where: Maranatha Dutch Church, 3 Sherborne Rd, Parktown, Johannesburg
