Dada Masilo's Hamlet contemporary dance in Johannesburg | What's On in Joburg

A New Season of Dada Masilo’s Hamlet Opens at The Market Theatre in May 2026

A bold reimagining of a literary classic returns to the stage as Dada Masilo’s Hamlet arrives at the Market Theatre for a limited run on 16 and 17 May 2026. Presented ahead of an international tour, the production offers local audiences a rare chance to experience one of Dada Masilo’s most recent works in Johannesburg, the city that shaped much of her creative voice.

Known for her ability to translate complex narratives into accessible, emotionally charged dance, Masilo’s interpretation of Hamlet strips back text in favour of movement, rhythm and atmosphere, inviting audiences into a layered, physical retelling of the story:

A new season takes shape

This upcoming season of Dada Masilo’s Hamlet introduces a refreshed cast and creative energy while staying rooted in Masilo’s original vision. The production is led by choreographer Llewellyn Mnguni, who is a long-time collaborator and also performs the role of Hamlet’s mother.

The cast reflects a dynamic blend of experience and emerging talent, with dancers from Joburg Ballet and Moving Into Dance joining original performers and newcomers. With a score composed by Thuthuka Sibisi, Ann Masina, Leroy Mapholo and Mpho Mothiba, the production leans into a musical landscape that complements its physical storytelling. The energy is described as electric, signalling a work that continues to grow and adapt with each staging.

The legacy of Dada Masilo’s Hamlet

Dada Masilo’s Hamlet originally premiered in Vienna in 2024 as part of the ImPulsTanz International Festival and has already travelled to major international stages, including Hamburg and Antwerp, before returning home. It stands as part of a broader body of work that saw Masilo perform in over 30 countries and 176 cities, earning her global recognition for her distinctive choreographic language.

Her approach, rooted in both classical ballet and African contemporary dance, challenged traditional forms while remaining deeply human and accessible. Even as her work reached international acclaim, Masilo chose to remain based in Johannesburg, drawing from the city’s intensity and edge.

This new staging of Dada Masilo’s Hamlet is not only a continuation of that work but a reflection of her enduring influence. Through collaborators, dancers and the ongoing life of her choreography, her voice remains present, shaping new interpretations while honouring the original intent.
