A Sea of Lilac Blooms: Where to See Jacarandas in Joburg and Pretoria This Spring

It’s that time of the year again when the beautiful Jacaranda trees finally come into bloom and the streets are covered in a sea of purple. Don’t miss the chance to get your picture-perfect moment amongst these purple blossoms and visit these Jacaranda hotspots before the blooming season comes to an end.

When and where to get an up-close look at the stunning purple spectacle

Despite not being indigenous to the country, the Jacaranda comes into bloom in South Africa each year, without fail for about eight weeks from the end of September to November.

These vibrant violet delights have become a spring season highlight in the Gauteng province, continuing to add a little something extra to a nation already known for its incredible natural beauty.

Jacarandas can be caught in bloom in the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria. Though Pretoria is widely known as the “Jacaranda City”, Johannesburg also has its fair share of hotspots where these beautiful trees can be caught in their full purple blossom.

Venture to Pretoria Central and hit up the historical Church Square for another great view of the Jacaranda trees in the area. The square earned its name centuries back, being surrounded by a number of churches until the early 20th-century.

Though not quite a church-heavy area anymore, the history of the area is still incredibly rich. The square inhabits various Boer statues as well as historical buildings and architecture such as the Palace of Justice, where the Rivonia Trials against famous anti-apartheid activists took place.

This is the perfect place to take in a world of history whilst surrounded by a sky of purple.
