Breathwork Africa is hosting a fascinating introduction to the art and science of breathwork for beginners and practitioners alike. This 3-day course running from 12 to 14 July connects the threads between science, spirituality, psychology, and health.
The experience is based on the Pneumanity breathing concept which is a full-spectrum approach inspired by African Indigenous wisdom and universal principles. The course is practical and relatively simple – while providing a substantial set of tools for practitioners or potential practitioners in breathwork.
What is Breathwork?
Breathwork, explained by Breathwork Africa, is simply the practice of breathing with awareness, intention and attention to our inner experience, in the present moment.
Conscious breathing practices can vary in duration, intensity and purpose. They can be as simple as a few minutes’ exercise to promote mental focus and relaxation, or they can last for an hour or more, creating altered states of consciousness and a deeply personal therapeutic process.
Used regularly, conscious breathing can help people develop the skill of relaxation, even in challenging situations. Conscious breathing can be practiced by all ages in all circumstances including at school, the workplace, sports, and during periods of stress.
More about Pneumanity Breathwork and the Seven Threads
These universal principles of breath and consciousness are found within the Indigenous Wisdom Traditions of Africa and are woven through the training both in terms of philosophy and practical application. The 7 threads of Pneumanity are the guiding principles of the ‘Pneumanitarians’: the practitioners and members of the Breathwork Africa Community. Teachers embody these principles in their own lives to hold and share them with others.
- SANKOFA: Breath is the thread between remembering and imagining
- SAFETY: Through our breath, we experience safety, the environment that supports the natural healing process
- EMBODIMENT: We acknowledge and support the wisdom of the body as an expression of and vehicle for breath
- WHOLENESS: We relate to our healing from our natural state of wholeness versus from a place of lack or pathology
- UBUNTU: This universal truth celebrates the interconnectedness of all of life and the breath as embodied by Ubuntu
- CREATIVITY: Conscious breathing transforms an unconscious function into a creative force, supporting our capacity for growth and change
- THE MYSTERY: Breath is the thread between the known and the unknowable
