Soweto Theatre is staging a new season of Have You Seen Zandile? which was originally performed in 1986 at The Market Theatre. The story takes audiences on a powerful journey through tradition, freedom, and the choices that shape our lives. Here’s why you need to see the play.
What is Have you seen Zandile? about?
The play follows the coming of age story of a Zandile who leads a blissful life with her cherished grandmother in Durban. Trouble arises when her mother relocates her to rural Transkei, and Zandile is forced to navigate traditional expectations that prioritise hard labor and early marriage over education.
As she mourns the loss of her grandmother’s nurturing presence, Zandile battles to find a balance between societal norms and her autonomy. Have you seen Zandile? is a story of strength and resilience.

A new work by acclaimed director Momo Matsunyane
The transformation of the lead character is brought to life by director Momo Matsunyane, who recently completed The Cry of Winnie Mandela. Momo’s involvement in the production gave her the opportunity to capture this timeless story for a new generation with her exceptional directorial expertise, storytelling, and cultural insight.
The role of Zandile is portrayed by Zevangeli Mampofu, an emerging actress who honed her craft at the Market Theatre Laboratory. Joining Zevangeli is Siseko Velelo, who showcases her impressive range, effortlessly embodying four diverse characters in the play: Gogo, Lulama, Lindama, and the Old Woman.
