A bold installation performance opens at The Market Theatre

Internationally acclaimed performance artist and NYC Bessie Award winner Albert Ibokwe Khoza joins forces with celebrated South African director Princess Zinzi Mhlongo to present The Black Circus of the Republic of Bantu. This bold, installation-based performance is a haunting and poetic exploration of fractured ethnic pride and the violent legacy of colonial objectification.

Through powerful visual language and visceral storytelling, the work confronts the pseudo-scientific dehumanisation of Black bodies — once studied and displayed as curiosities, as though of a different species. It questions what we inherit, what we bury, and what must be unearthed.

At its core, the performance is an offering to Sarah Baartman and countless others whose bodies were exploited. It is a ritual of remembrance, resistance, and reclamation.
