Sankayi Saturday Sessions is a brand-new recurring live music series in Morningside, showcasing some of South Africa’s finest contemporary musicians and bands.

Expanding on the success of the Sankayi Jazz Series, Saturday Sessions offers a relaxed and vibrant evening of outstanding live music in one of Johannesburg’s most distinctive dining venues.

Each Sankayi Saturday Session is carefully curated to present exceptional artists across a range of contemporary genres while maintaining the high musical standard that has become synonymous with Sankayi.

Combined with outstanding food, drinks and hospitality, Saturday Sessions offer memorable nights out where great music and great company come together.

Sankayi Jazz Series & DJ Bob Present: The Afrikan Rekord

The Sankayi Saturday Sessions launch this July, and an exciting feature of the sessions is The Afrikan Rekord, a recurring vinyl experience curated by DJ Bob and friends, celebrating the rich musical heritage of Africa and its diaspora.

Blending jazz, funk, soul, Afrobeat, disco, Latin grooves and Outernational sounds, each session takes guests on a carefully curated musical journey played entirely on vinyl.

The Afrikan Rekord transforms Saturday evenings into a space for conversation, discovery and great music. Guests are invited to settle in, enjoy dinner, share a bottle of wine and experience an eclectic soundtrack that celebrates the depth and diversity of African and global musical culture.

Week 1 – Wendy Allen Twyford & Bisoux w/ special guests – ‘Reimagined’ Album Launch

Bisoux translates to “kisses” in the beautiful language of French – a fitting name for a cutting-edge jazz ensemble that invites audiences into an intimate musical world where sophistication passion & world-class artistry converge.

Bisoux has become renowned for its distinctive reinterpretations of much-loved songs. Each musical offering is infused with a refined jazz sensibility while honouring the emotional heart of the original through deeply lived-in arrangements that reflect the band’s evolving sound and on-stage chemistry.

Audiences have long asked to take these creative moments home with them. ‘Reimagined’ is the answer – a collection of the band’s signature renditions, lovingly crafted in the studio over the past three years.

Join Wendy Allen Twyford & Bisoux for the official launch of their debut album, backed by a stellar line-up of South Africa’s finest musicians.

The performance features Wendy Allen Twyford on vocals; Teboho Kobedi on piano, keyboards and synthesizers; Gally Ngoveni on double bass and electric bass and Rob Watson on drums with special guests Sydney Mavundla on trumpet and Thamie Mahlangu on saxophone.

Sankayi Saturday Sessions DJ Bob | What's on in Joburg

Week 2 – Afrikan Rekord: DJ Bob with special guest Zviko Dryad

Week two of the August edition of the Sankayi Saturday Session features fellow vinyl DJ, Zviko Dryad. A seamless blender of genres, she is set to offer a sonic journey through a variety of sounds alongside veteran, DJ Bob.

Week 3 – Afrikan Rekord: DJ Bob with special guest Salym Fayad

For Week three of the Sankayi Saturday Sessions, the Afrikan Rekord invites Salym Fayad to the decks. A producer of culture, a correspont, photographer and more, creativity is nothing new to Salym. Alongside, DJ Bob, he’ll be curating a vinyl set for the genre-fluid and jazz-loving.

The Masekela Band Sankayi Saturday Session | What's on in Joburg

Week 4 – The Masekela Band

To close out the August sessions, Sankayi welcomes The Masekela Band, the legendary musicians who shared the stage with Bra Hugh during the final fifteen years of his extraordinary career.

Since Hugh Masekela’s passing in 2018, the band has continued to celebrate his remarkable musical legacy through performances across South Africa and beyond.

From the joyous energy of ‘Grazing in the Grass’ to the profound storytelling of ‘Stimela’, they bring the music to life with the authenticity, warmth and spirit that made Hugh Masekela one of South Africa’s greatest musical ambassadors.
