It’s been a while since we last saw Rami Malek in a widescreen release, and The Amateur is the new nail-biting espionage thriller by 20th Century Fox featuring Laurence Fishburne. Charlie Heller is a CIA cryptographer who goes on a global quest for vengeance after his wife is killed in a London terrorist attack. When his superiors refuse to act, Heller coerces them into providing field training to take on the perpetrators himself. The film opens on 11 April 2025. Here’s what you need to know.

What is The Amateur about?

Charlie Heller (Malek) is a brilliant but deeply introverted decoder for the CIA whose life is turned upside down when his wife is killed in a London terrorist attack. When his supervisors refuse to take action, he takes matters into his own hands and goes on a dangerous trek across the globe to track down those responsible. He taps into his intelligence as the ultimate weapon for eluding his pursuers and metes out revenge.

The film also stars Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, Jon Bernthal, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, Adrian Martinez, Danny Sapani, and Laurence Fishburne.

The Amateur is directed by James Hawes. The screenplay is by Ken Nolan and Gary Spinelli, based on the novel by Robert Littell.
