The Bodyguard: The Musical, featuring the incredible love story of superstar Rachel Marron and her bodyguard, Frank Farmer, and made famous in the iconic film starring the late, great Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, comes to the Joburg stage in April 2027 for the first time ever.
A love story for the ages
The Bodyguard: The Musical follows Frank Farmer, a former Secret Service agent hired as a private bodyguard to protect global singing superstar Rachel Marron from a mystery stalker. As he follows his duty in protecting Marron and her family, Farmer also begins to struggle with growing romantic feelings for his client.
Released in 1992, The Bodyguard became the tenth highest-grossing film of all time at the time, and the soundtrack, performed by multi-platinum, award-winning Whitney Houston, broke records. It became the best-selling soundtrack album in history, selling more than 45 million copies worldwide, and earned the 1994 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. The lead single “I Will Always Love You”, a cover of a Dolly Parton song, became one of Houston’s biggest hits and also the best-selling single by a female artist of all time.
The soundtrack’s other songs, “I Have Nothing” and “Run To You”, were both nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song, and each achieved major chart success.
From screen to stage
With its combination of chart-topping music, glamorous superstar energy, romance and edge-of-your-seat drama, The Bodyguard: The Musical is a spectacular theatrical experience for Whitney Houston fans, romance fans, and musical theatre audiences alike.
As fame, danger and desire collide, an unexpected romance unfolds on stage; each act is backed by some of Whitney Houston’s biggest hits, including “I Will Always Love You,” “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” “Queen of the Night,” “I Have Nothing,” “Run to You” and “So Emotional.”
The stage premiere marks back-to-back shows based on blockbuster Hollywood films for Showtime Management, which recently brought Pretty Woman: The Musical to South Africa for the first time and MAMMA MIA! for a return season. The addition of The Bodyguard: The Musical cements Showtime Management’s reputation for showcasing major musicals featuring an all-South African cast, crew and musicians.

The cast will be announced soon, especially because fans are clamouring to see which stars will play which role, particularly the iconic leads of Rachel Marron and Frank Farmer, made famous by Whitney Houston and Oscar-winner Kevin Costner.

The Bodyguard: The Musical is rated PG and recommended for ages 12 and up (due to adult themes, language, and content).
