In celebration of Heritage Month, the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra Symphonic Jazz Festival invites you to this year’s vibrant celebration of the world of South African jazz. The festival takes place at the Linder Auditorium on Wednesday, 24 September 2025, offering a rich tapestry of jazz music that honours the country’s beautiful musical heritage. Here’s what you need to know.

A collaborative showcase of South African jazz
For the 2025 edition of the Symphonic Jazz Festival, the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra collaborates with the ZAR Jazz Orchestra led by renowned trumpeter Marcus Wyatt. The repertoire is drawn from The Songbook – a collection of some of the most iconic and important South African jazz songs from the last half a century – orchestrated for a full orchestra with big band and rhythm sections.

The incredible orchestral and soloist lineup
The Heritage concert features Siya Mthembu of the jazz ensemble The Brother Moves On; South African trombonist, vocalist, and composer Siya Makuzeni; and special guest vocalist Yonela Mnana.
The ZAR Jazz Orchestra and soloist lineup includes Adam Howard as lead; Sakhile Simane on trumpet; Bez Roberts on lead trombone; Justin Sasman on trombone/tuba; Simon Manana, Mthunzi Mvubu, Janus van der Merwe, Muhammad Dawjee, and Sisonke Xonti on saxophone; Mike Bester on guitar; Romy Brauteseth on bass; Bokani Dyer on piano; and Marlon Witbooi on drums.
