The Joburg Theatre, formerly known as the Johannesburg Civic Theatre, is situated in the heart of the Johannesburg city centre in Braamfontein. Its biggest attraction is the popular pantomime, written and directed by Janice Honeyman that has families filling up the Nelson Mandela auditorium every festive season.
The Mandela auditorium is also known for hosting West End and Broadway musicals like The Colour Purple and West Side Story, tribute shows and global touring productions such as Lord of the Dance.
Joburg Theatre is the permanent home of Joburg Ballet and host of the ballet company’s seasonal productions. It houses the People’s Theatre Company with Jill Girard and Keith Smith, showcasing work for children between the ages 3 and 13. Its developmental arm is the black-box theatre called space.com which provides a platform for developing community arts projects.
