Initially a challenge to knit 67 blankets in honour of Nelson Mandela’s legacy, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day has since grown into an international movement of volunteers, affectionately known as KnitWits, who knit and crochet handmade blankets for people in need.
Through its colourful creations and community initiatives, the organisation continues to bring people together, one stitch at a time.
How to help with 67 Blankets

Wool, wildlife and a little wonder
In honour of Senior Citizens Month, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, and Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo invites seniors for a morning of knitting, crocheting, companionship and wildlife on Tuesday, 27 October 2026.
Under the theme A Day of Warmth, Wool & Wonder, senior citizens, knitting enthusiasts, and the organisation’s much-loved KnitWits are invited to gather at the Zoo’s Bandstand precinct for a morning celebrating creativity, community, and the contributions of older generations.
In addition to communal knitting and crochet circles, the morning also features music, picnics and opportunities to enjoy the Zoo’s wildlife through assisted shuttle experiences designed to make the visit more accessible to older guests.
Whether guests are experienced KnitWits or simply keen to join the fun, 67 Blankets is encouraging participants to arrive ready to knit or crochet. They can bring their own wool or yarn, knitting needles or crochet hooks, or purchase wool at the event from The Factory Wool Shop, who will be on site.
Additionally, those who would prefer to contribute a completed handmade (knitted or crocheted) blanket are welcome to do so. Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic, picnic blanket or portable armchair and enjoy the morning at their own pace.
