A rhythmic explosion of heritage and soul

A Tribute to Hugh Masekela brings four unforgettable evenings of music, memory, and celebration in honour of the legendary trumpeter whose sound became the heartbeat of South Africa’s liberation and joy. In collaboration with the Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation, this powerful tribute brings together an extraordinary lineup of artists whose voices reflect the richness, resilience, and evolution of African music.

Hugh Masekela was the ultimate collaborator and a world-class teacher whose trumpet was a lead voice that changed how jazz came to look and sound globally. From his deep community roots to his relations across the globe, Bra Hugh’s Pan-African vision remains the gold standard for artistry.

Witness the magic directed by the marvelous James Ngcobo, whose artistic direction transforms the stage into a living tribute. Under the meticulous musical direction of Sydney Mavundla, the trumpet remains the lead, ensuring every note resonates with the precision and passion of the maestro himself.

The celebration starts the moment guests walk through the doors. The Joburg Theatre foyer will feature opportunities to take photos with Hugh Masekela’s legendary horn, explore bespoke and limited-edition images of Masekela and purchase a piece of history with branded remembrance items reflecting his true artistry.

A lineup fit for a legend

Every artist on this bill carries a piece of Masekela’s fire. Starting with Vusi Mahlasela; the folk icon also known as “The Voice,” Vusi lends his stirring vocals and storytelling spirit, embodying the same unwavering commitment to justice that defined Masekela’s career.

Next on the lineup is Judith Sephuma, South Africa’s Queen of Afro-Jazz, whose long-standing collaborative history with Bra Hugh brings a sophisticated power to the stage that only a true peer can provide. Zoë Modiga’s contemporary grace reinterprets Masekela’s timeless classics with a depth that bridges the gap between the legends and the avant-garde.

Internationally celebrated Afro-pop star, Tresor, brings a vibrant, cross-continental energy that echoes Bra Hugh’s mission to unite Africa through song. Finally, completing the lineup are the Baobab Sisters & iComplete, infusing the evening with rhythm, movement, and the harmonious flair that Bra Hugh championed throughout his life.
