Joburg Ballet presents Giselle in Johannesburg | What's On in Joburg

Joburg Ballet Turns 25 With a Fantastic Season of Giselle This February

Joburg Ballet celebrates an incredible milestone with the return of Giselle, one of the most revered romantic ballets in history. The story of a haunting beauty takes centre stage for two weekends only – at the Joburg Theatre from 12 to 15 February 2026, and at the South African State Theatre from 20 to 22 February 2026.

This production honours both the company’s legacy and its continued artistic evolution during its 25th anniversary season. First performed by the company during its founding year in 2001, Giselle has remained a defining work in its repertoire. Now, a quarter century later, its revival signals both reflection and renewal.

Joburg Ballet presents Giselle: What to expect

This anniversary staging is led by internationally respected South African-born ballerina Angela Malan, whose expertise brings both authenticity and fresh insight to the production. Working alongside Joburg Ballet’s experienced artistic team, Malan guides a cast of accomplished principal dancers and emerging talents, ensuring a performance that balances tradition with contemporary excellence.

The production also reflects the company’s deep artistic roots. Several members of the creative team previously performed Giselle themselves, adding personal insight and continuity to the staging. Their combined experience strengthens the emotional and technical integrity of the ballet, while offering audiences a richly layered interpretation.

A timeless story of love, betrayal and redemption

Created in June 1841, Giselle is a deeply moving story that explores love’s power to endure beyond death. The ballet follows a young woman whose fragile heart is broken by betrayal, leading to tragedy and a supernatural journey that unfolds between the worlds of the living and the dead.

The role of Giselle remains one of the most demanding in classical ballet, requiring both emotional vulnerability and exceptional technical skill. Alongside the principal roles, the production also highlights the strength of the company’s ensemble, particularly during the ethereal second act, where the ghostly Wilis create one of ballet’s most unforgettable scenes.
