Man With No Surname is a gripping an emotionally layered theatrical production proudly presented by the Joburg Theatre. The play, being staged from 27 March to 12 April 2026, delves into the complexities of identity, morality, and the enduring echoes of South Africa’s political struggle.

A gripping and powerful tale rooted in South African history
Through powerful storytelling, evocative music, and commanding performances, Man With No Surname invites audiences into a deeply reflective journey about belonging, responsibility, and the fragile nature of the human spirit.
The production tells the story of Thabo, a respected doctor and former freedom fighter who once stood firmly in the fight for justice and liberation. Years later, however, he finds himself grappling with a profound moral crisis when the woman he loves becomes the victim of a sexual predator. In confronting this tragedy, Thabo is forced to reckon with the ideals he once fought for, the choices he has made, and the man he has become.
Opposite him stands Moruti, a writer returning home after years of self-imposed exile in the United States. As he reconnects with the land, the memories, and the unresolved tensions of the past, he confronts his own questions about identity, masculinity, and what it means to belong in a country still wrestling with the consequences of its history.
Together, the two men navigate a landscape filled with memory, regret, hope, and the unseen presence of ancestors.

Meet the cast and crew of Man With No Surname
Known as one of the country’s most influential creative voices, Mfundi Vundla has spent decades shaping the South African cultural landscape through storytelling that reflects the lived realities, struggles, and aspirations of the nation. With Man With No Surname, Vundla returns to the stage with a deeply personal and thought-provoking work.
The production is directed by James Ngcobo, Artistic Director of the Joburg City Theatres, who recently directed the hit production Motown and has previously helmed critically acclaimed works such as Dancing The Death Drill and The Piano Lesson, among many others.
Bringing this powerful story to life are two remarkable performers whose talent and depth give the play its emotional intensity. Bonko Khoza, one of South Africa’s most compelling contemporary actors, leads the production with a performance that is both nuanced and deeply affecting.
Alongside him is Pakamisa Zwedala, whose commanding stage presence and emotional depth bring a powerful counterpoint to the production. Zwedala’s performance grounds the narrative with sensitivity and intensity, allowing the audience to witness the internal struggles of a man returning home to confront his past.
Together, Khoza and Zwedala create a dynamic on-stage relationship that drives the emotional core of the production. Their performances reveal the complexity of male friendship, vulnerability, and accountability, offering a rare and intimate portrayal of masculinity in transition.
