Sarafina at Joburg Theatre: New Energy for This South African Classic

Just in time for Youth Month, Joburg Theatre will re-stage a special season of Sarafina! from 30 May to 15 June 2025. The critically acclaimed musical pays homage to the legacy of its creator, Mbongeni Ngema and his Family. This must-see musical is a story of inspiration and empowerment for the youth, while also paying tribute to the brave women who played vital roles in the struggle against oppression. Here’s what you need to know.

What’s in store for the 2025 staging

Narrating such a pivotal chapter in South Africa’s history is no easy task. Director Mpho Molepo worked hard to weave together powerful storytelling and vibrant performances for the 2025 season of this Broadway-renowned production. Choreography is by the innovative Nompumelele Gumede-Ngema.

Actress Noxolo Dlamini takes the lead as Sarafina for the 2025 staging. “I’m very blessed to have played the role before, said Noxolo in an interview with SABC News. “I played the role in 2017 and 2019, so I’m pretty familiar with what is required, and I guess the weight of the story.” Noxolo made her breakthrough with the Netflix show JIVA! and holds a number of qualifications in theatre and ballet. Supporting roles are led by the talented singer Hlengiwe Pearl, who is mostly known for her soulful sounds, and the emerging actress Busisiwe Mhlanga.

The story of Sarafina! and what you need to know

The story unfolds in the wake of the historic events of 1976 against the backdrop of Morris Isaacson High School in Soweto, when approximately 200,000 black students united in protest against the apartheid regime’s oppressive education system. Sarafina! serves as a poignant reminder of South Africa’s turbulent past.

This iconic musical was originally conceived and directed by the renowned Dr. Mbongeni Ngema. He is not only the visionary behind the production but also the creative force who composed and arranged the powerful music and lyrics, featuring additional songs by the legendary Hugh Masakela.
