Discovery, Learning and Fun at the Science Film Festival Family Day

The Science Film Festival, taking place on Saturday, 22 November 2025 is a Family Day filled with discovery, learning, and fun at the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg. This 2025 edition is shining a spotlight on Green Jobs, exploring their vital role in building a sustainable future.

The theme highlights eco-friendly innovation and environmental responsibility, with a special focus on the agricultural sector and its impact on our environment.  Here’s what you need to know.

What to expect from the Science Film Festival Family Day

The event celebrates creativity, innovation, and sustainable solutions that inspire a greener, brighter future for all. 

Activities include engaging science film screenings, interactive discussions on sustainability and green careers , and hands-on activities for children and families.

The Science Film Festival also takes place in various locations across South Africa in collaboration with Play Africa and the Centre for Creative Arts. 

The full day’s programme is as follows:

12.30pm – Science Film Screenings: (all age groups) 

Featured titles include:

  • Astronomy for kids: Exploring the solar system (Czech Republic) 
  • Astronomy for Kids: Understanding Earth’s Movements (Czech Republic)
  • Super Scientists (South Africa)
  • The Bottle Bob (Ethiopia)
  • Should we switch to Solar (USA).

1pm – Workshops and Activities

The workshop and activity lineup includes:

  • STEM Activity on the Solar System with Play Africa
  • Upcycling Waste through Crafting Workshop
  • How Solar Light is made (Presentation and Quiz)
  • Clothing Swap for adults and children with Dese
  • Clothing Mending Workshop
  • Patch & Stitch workshop.

2pm – Interactive Round Table: “Green Jobs for a sustainable future” (for adults and children)  

The discussion will explore how green jobs are the fundamental key powering the transition to a low-carbon economy and will delve into why placing green jobs at the center of economic and policy strategies is critical for a sustainable future. A key focus will be on the vital role young people play in driving this shift by entering and innovating within the green workforce. 

The roundtable is moderated by Sentle Nell and features Mamonei Ndaba (The Grit-Fit), Himkaar Singh (Compost Kitchen), Sonnenglas, Neo Seletisha (iet.sene), Hector Dibakoane (Dese), and Collen Shoko (Patch ‘n’ Stitch).

3.30pm – Science Film Screenings: (all age groups) 

Featured titles include: 

  • The River Rescue (Brazil)
  • nine-and-a-half: Microplastics in the Soil – A Hidden Danger? (Germany)
  • The Wild Mile: A River Reborn (USA)
  • Green Jobs at Kelem’s Garden (Ethiopia) 

4pm  Workshops and Activities

This round of workshops and activities includes:

  • STEM: Water purification with Play Africa
  • Composting Workshop
  • Upcycling Waste through Crafting Workshop with iet.sene designs
  • Clothing Swap for adults and children with Dese
  • Clothing Mending Workshop
  • Patch & Stitch workshop

5pm  Science Film Screenings: (all age groups)  

Featured titles include: 

  • Forever Seven (Germany)
  • nine-and-a-half: Nature Conservation with AI – Can Computers Help the Environment? (Germany)
  • When AI Meets Conservation (Gabon)
  • The Data-Driven Kitchen (UK) 

All day – STEM Exhibition: Universe. Human. Intelligence.  

This educational exhibition can be visited all day, assisted by a facilitator explaining the different exhibition modules.

The exhibition presents five topics in an interactive format: The Universe, Human History, our Brain, Anthropocence and AI. Celebrate innovation, creativity, and sustainable solutions that will help shape a greener, brighter future for all. 

The Science Film Festival also takes place in various locations around South Africa in collaboration with our trusted partners, Play Africa and the Centre for Creative Arts.
