The South African Air Force (SAAF) is planning an epic SAAF Museum Air Show on Saturday, 4 May in Pretoria. On the agenda are magnificent aircraft displays for some of the country’s best aircraft models, a mini-war demonstration, and a chance to meet aerobatic teams and experts.
All you need to know about this military air show in Pretoria
If you’re keen on aircraft or looking to get an idea of our national air defence, the South African Air Force Museum event is one one not to be missed. The theme for this year’s air show in Pretoria is ‘Flight through time – Legends of the skies’, to highlight the evolution of flight and showcase the SAAF’s capabilities.
“Since we were forced into hiatus by Covid, we are back with a bang,” says General Matanda. “The annual SAAF Museum Air Show plays a vital role in generating funds to keep SAAF Museum aircraft flying as it is the Museum’s primary revenue source. It also preserves static aircraft for future generations.”
SAAF Museum aircraft as well as currently serving military and civilian aircraft promises to keep the crowds entertained. Expect active duty SAAF participation from key pilots and fundis who will showcase the Silver Falcons PC-7 Mk II solo display, Hawk formation, Gripen fighters, C212 transport, and A109 and two BK 117 helicopters, are some of the few machines on the cards.
South Africa’s top aerobatic display teams have agreed to take part in the air show, and these include the Puma Flying Lions, Hired Guns, Team Extra with Nigel Hopkins and Jason Beamish, Goodyear Eagles, Raptors, and Navion display team.
The South African Army will run a midday mini-war demonstration that features mock firefights, troop insertion and extraction, aerial attacks and more. There will also be a large display of military hardware, such as air surveillance radars, 35 mm anti-aircraft guns, and vehicles.
Free Gautrain bus rides from Centurion to the museum
Gautrain is one of the Museum Air Show’s main partners, and will be offering a free bus shuttle from the Centurion Gautrain station to the museum. The SAAF Museum also ran a series of air versus land races leading up to the event. The Alouette II helicopter raced the Gautrain, which is one of the fastest trains in the country, from Midrand to Centurion. Results came in with Alouette II firmly beating the speed train.
According to Deputy Chief of the Air Force, Major General Mayenzeke Matanda, the race was part of raising awareness for the show and showcasing the capabilities of the SAAF and SAAF Museum.
