The Cry of Winnie Mandela Returns to The Market Theatre

The Market Theatre is bringing another season of The Cry of Winnie Mandela which raked in great reviews last year. Based on the popular novel by poet, novelist, and essayist Njabulo Ndebele, this play unfolds with stories of resilience directed by the award-winning MoMo Matsunyane who was the 2023 Standard Bank Young Artist Winner for Theatre. Here’s what you need to know.

What is The Cry of Winnie Mandela about?

The Cry of Winnie Mandela is a powerful play that explores the experiences of four women who, in different ways, have endured long periods of waiting in the absence of their men. Framed through the imagination of a literary professor, their personal stories intertwine, revealing the emotional weight of waiting—marked by longing, uncertainty, and resilience.

This dynamic adaptation by Alex Burger blends moments of deep emotion with touches of wry humour, bringing to life the shadows of isolation and the complexities of their struggles. As their conversations unfold, their individual experiences are intricately woven into the story of Winnie Mandela, drawing parallels between personal endurance and historical struggle.

At its heart, the play examines the universal theme of waiting, inviting audiences to reflect not only on the challenges faced by women throughout history but also on how these experiences resonate in the present day.
