The Peoples Theatre is one of only two dedicated companies that specialise in family and kids shows in Johannesburg. For over 35 years, they’ve been providing world-class, fun-filled, and educational theatre to countless families throughout South Africa. The team operates from and stage four productions each year at a purpose-built children’s theatre in Joburg Theatre.

A revamped staging of Shrek the Musical JR in March 2026

Following a hugely successful earlier season, Peoples Theatre is bringing everyone’s favourite green ogre back to the stage in Shrek the Musical JR, running from 10 March to 19 April 2026.

The production has been fully refreshed to deliver an even bigger, brighter and more magical theatrical experience for audiences of all ages. Expect a lively cast of professional performers bringing fresh humour and heart to the beloved roles of Shrek, Fiona and Donkey. Musical numbers have been reworked with energetic, contemporary choreography, while brand-new costumes, imaginative set pieces and enhanced lighting transport audiences deeper into the whimsical world of Far Far Away.

Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and specially adapted for younger theatre-goers, the show follows Shrek and his quick-witted companion Donkey as they set out to rescue Princess Fiona and reclaim Shrek’s swamp from Lord Farquaad.

Peoples Theatre’s exciting Kids Club is specially designed for young theatre lovers who can’t get enough of the magic on stage. Here, favourite fantasy characters are brought to life in colourful, captivating productions, and members enjoy a host of exclusive benefits. There are more than 3,000 children already signed up; the club offers a warm and welcoming community for families.

Members receive a free ticket to the production closest to their birthday, along with reduced ticket rates — just R140pp for the member and R150pp for accompanying family and friends, provided the member pays upon collection.
