In celebration of Heritage Month, the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra Symphonic Jazz Festival invites you to this year’s vibrant world of South African jazz. The festival takes place at the Linder Auditorium on 20 and 22 September, offering a rich tapestry of jazz music that honours the country’s beautiful musical heritage.
The SA Symphonic Jazz Songbook pays tribute to jazz heritage
The festival opens on Friday, 20 September, with a performance of the ‘SA Symphonic Jazz Songbook,’ conducted by the acclaimed Marcus Wyatt. The JPO and ZAR Orchestra will present a grand selection of South African jazz classics, including works by Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, and Abdullah Ibrahim, alongside contemporary artists like Feya Faku and Benjamin Jephta.
The evening will also feature Tutu Puoane’s vocals, with performances by Siyabonga Mthembu and Siya Makuzeni.
The Devroop Jazz Quintet presents a modern jazz showcase
The festival continues on 22 September with a performance by the Devroop Jazz Quintet, led by distinguished alto saxophonist Karendra Devroop, renowned for his international collaborations and performances. Devroop brings a fresh, modern touch to jazz.
The quintet includes Roland Moses on keys, Mageshen Naidoo on guitar, Rob Watson on drums, and Romy Brauteseth on double bass. This performance promises to showcase Devroop’s versatile artistry and offer a contemporary jazz experience.
