The Sankayi Jazz Series has the honour of presenting the official Joburg launch of Sisonke Xonti’s powerful new album, uKholo, at The Market Theatre on Saturday, 7 November 2026.
uKholo comes six years after the celebrated jazz saxophonist, composer and bandleader’s last album and explores themes of faith, hope, healing and resilience. The Joburg show follows a special concert in Cape Town.

Sisonke Xonti returns to music with an earnest reflection on faith
Sisonke Xonti’s musical journey has taken him onto stages alongside some of the most respected names in South African and international jazz.
He has shared the stage with Nduduzo Makhathini, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Tsoaeli, Salif Keita and Jimmy Dludlu. His new album, uKholo, has already attracted international support from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Nicola Conte, Chico Freeman, Daz-I-Kue, Andrew Jervis, QwestTV, Jazz News and Radio France.
uKholo, meaning faith, embodies the essence of faith in challenging times. Drawing on deeply resonant melodies and heartfelt lyrics, the album explores fear, grief, healing and solace. It encourages listeners to embrace peace, find strength in vulnerability and recognise the importance of community and connection.

An early opportunity to hear uKholo live in Joburg
For this special album launch performance in Joburg, Xonti – who will be performing on saxophone and vocals – is joined by an exceptional ensemble of South African musicians:
- Benjamin Jephta on double bass
- Yonela Mnana on piano and vocals
- Ayanda Sikade on drums and vocals
- Keenan Ahrends on guitar and vocals
- Gontse Makhene on percussion
The production goes beyond a conventional jazz concert. Directed by Jefferson Tshabalala, the live presentation is a theatrical experience that combines powerful live jazz, storytelling, staging and visual elements to bring the story of uKholo to life.
