Dark Matter is a new storytelling and sound production that takes guests on a journey into the cosmos, moving beyond mere explanation to a deeper interrogation of humanity’s relationship with the unknown. The project is the latest from the Universe On Stage and runs for a limited season.
The vast majority of the universe remains unseen, unmeasured, and directly incomprehensible. What we perceive as reality—galaxies, stars, and all visible matter—constitutes only a minuscule fraction of existence. The rest of the universe is dark matter, which is invisible. We can’t see it directly, but we know it exists because of how its gravity affects the stars and galaxies around it.
This new production embraces this disquieting reality, transforming it into a powerful lens through which to examine the limits of our understanding and the human experience of confronting the inexplicable:

Inside this new production by The Universe on Stage
Rather than attempting to demystify the unobservable universe, this debut production of Dark Matter cleverly employs this scientific enigma as a foundational framework to delve into a more profound philosophical inquiry: what transpires when the very systems and paradigms we rely upon to comprehend the world prove inherently incomplete?
The narrative intricately weaves through three seminal moments in scientific history, each representing a significant rupture in humanity’s perception of reality. These pivotal shifts challenged established beliefs, forcing a re-evaluation of what was considered true and knowable.
By juxtaposing these historical intellectual crises with the contemporary mystery of dark matter, the production invites audiences to reflect on the discomfort and revelation inherent in confronting the boundaries of human knowledge, fostering a unique dialogue between scientific discovery and existential contemplation.

The music and design of Dark Matter
Both the sonic and visual landscape of Dark Matter are carefully crafted through a deliberate interplay of contrasts, designed to render the invisible perceptible. A live grand piano serves as the performance’s anchor, its classical presence harmonising with real-time electronic looping, evocative narration, and immersive projection design.
“Music allows us to access that space differently,” says composer and pianist Yash Modi. “It creates a way to feel scale, ambiguity and tension – to sit inside something that isn’t fully resolved.” Modi has developed an entirely new musical program for the production, where each live performance is constructed spontaneously, without any pre-recorded sequences.
This dynamic approach results not in a conventional concert, but in a live enactment of the show’s central theme: something continuously taking shape in real-time, embracing uncertainty and the absence of a fixed, predetermined outcome.

More about The Universe On Stage
The Universe On Stage is an independent studio founded by two friends of wildly different backgrounds. Yash Modi is a guitarist, vocalist, and lyricist and has been playing the piano since age 8. Dr Luca Pontiggia holds an undergraduate degree in Nuclear Engineering and, at the age of 27, a PhD in String Theory.
The studio launched their first production, Hidden Giants, in 2022 at The Bioscope cinema with great success. They have since performed many sell-out shows, becoming the most successful show in the 15 years at The Bioscope. They have ambitions to perform on the largest stages around South Africa and eventually, the world.
Both Dr Luca and Yash host live science talks coupled with a musical score played live on stage, backdropped by beautiful cinematic visuals. Performances are crafted to make science not just accessible but relatable, beautiful and entertaining for all audiences.
