Stevenson Gallery art exhibitions in Johannesburg | What's on in Joburg

Stevenson Gallery: Tomorrow is Another Day by Neo Matloga

For his exhibition in 12 years at Stevenson’s Johannesburg gallery, Neo Matloga once again leans in on his signature painting, collage and monotype printmaking for the expressive marks these mediums allow. He treats ink, charcoal and quick-drying paints as tools that demand focus and urgency, giving his practice a strong sense of presence in time.

Scale is central to his work. His figures command attention, their direct gaze reaching beyond the frame to challenge the viewer. They are not passive subjects, but active presences that return the look. This effect is heightened through his collaged approach, where different materials introduce distinct gestures and tones. Hands are a recurring focus, collaged onto canvas with monotype prints, drawing the eye to the subtleties of body language. For Matloga, the hand carries political weight, symbolising labour, care and access.

Cost: Free entry

When: Running until 25 October. Tuesday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Saturday, 10am to 1pm
Where: Stevenson Gallery, 46 7th Ave, Parktown North, Randburg, Johannesburg
