Make some time to see JCAF’s new “Structures” art exhibition
The exhibition presents aspects and possibilities in the connection between people and places. Within this broad theme, issues of race, colonialism, migration and modernism are examined through a series of otherworldly installations. Structures is curated in three interconnected sections: situatedness, infrastructures and typologies.
One of the key features is the immersive South African Pavilion from the 2024 Venice Biennale (originally commissioned by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture). The interactive work tells the story of a city made of couscous by a women-led architectural collective. On display are delicate photographs that capture light in Tunisia, and a reconstructed Brazilian installation from the 1970s that visitors can walk on, over, and through.

Johannesburg’s most anticipated creative festival, Constitution Hill’s Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival, offers a jam-packed line-up of creative immersions and experiences, culminating in the Sounds of Freedom Music Festival to end things off.
This year’s lineup will include Pabi Cooper, Mthandeni, Toss, Kid Fonque, DJ Cindo, Que DJ, Jah Seed & The Admiral, and more acts. Party goers can also look forward to a guest performance from this year’s Basha Uhuru Music Legacy Award winner: none other than Kwaito legends, Boom Shaka.
The music festival opens at 10am, and festival goers can enjoy a full day at the Curated Market with live music and performances, activations, food stalls and bars.

Phakamisa Dance Commission by Asanda Ruda
Asanda Ruda performs a self-choreographed, commissioned dance double bill at the Market Theatre.
Her double bill performance includes pieces entitled KEMET – Black Lands and Alkamal Walkamal Almutlaq or Completeness and Absolute Wholeness (ancient Arabic).
This is a National Arts Festival, The Market Theatre and JOMBA! Dance Festival (Centre for Creative Arts) co-production, with contributing funding from Standard Bank South Africa.
